DeKalb County, Georgia, is mourning a devastating tragedy after 7-month-old Kalayia Tolbert and 33-year-old Cameron Gabriel Kemp of Covington lost their lives following a 10-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 late Saturday night, October 10, 2026.What began as a high-speed pursuit ended in heartbreak, leaving families and loved ones grieving two lives lost under tragic circumstances.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, the incident began around 11:59 p.m. when a trooper spotted an Audi traveling approximately 110 mph in a 60 mph zone without its headlights on. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver reportedly accelerated away.
The pursuit continued along I-20 until the Audi exited at Wesley Chapel Road. Authorities reported that Kemp lost control, struck a guardrail, and collided with multiple vehicles.
Ten vehicles were involved in the crash. Three infants traveling in one of the struck vehicles were rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Tragically, Kalayia later died from her injuries. Kemp was also transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he subsequently died.
Remembering Kalayia Tolbert
At just seven months old, Kalayia had barely begun her journey through life. She should have had years of milestones ahead of her—first steps, first words, birthdays filled with joy, warm embraces, bedtime lullabies, and countless moments surrounded by family.
Her death is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be and how a single tragedy can forever change the lives of those left behind. The future she deserved to experience remains unwritten, leaving her loved ones to cherish the time they had with her while facing the pain of her absence.
Kemp’s death also adds to the loss surrounding the crash. As families process what happened, the consequences of that night extend beyond the collision itself, touching loved ones and others whose lives were changed by the incident.
For everyone grieving Kalayia and Kemp, words may offer little comfort in the face of such sudden loss. Behind every name is a life, a story, and a circle of people who must now navigate a future without someone they knew or loved.
May Kalayia’s family find strength in their darkest hours, and may all those affected by this devastating crash receive the support, comfort, and peace they need in the days ahead.
May Kalayia Tolbert and Cameron Gabriel Kemp rest in peace. May their loved ones find strength as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
