With heavy hearts, we remember Nasir Cox, 22, of Philadelphia, whose life was tragically cut short in a shooting near Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware, on Saturday night. His death has left family and friends grieving a young life lost far too soon.
According to police, the shooting occurred at approximately 9:19 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dover Commons shopping center, located in the 1200 block of North Dupont Highway.
Earlier that day, thousands of students and visitors had gathered for Delaware State University’s homecoming events. The events were required to end, and attendees were directed to leave campus at approximately 6 p.m., leading to large crowds at nearby shopping centers and other locations.
More than 50 officers from multiple departments were already working in the area when the shooting occurred. Police said officers had been managing crowds and responding to disturbances, including fights, disorderly conduct, and reports of gunfire at multiple locations.
Officers found a 21-year-old man suffering from an upper-body gunshot wound. While providing aid, they also discovered Nasir, who had been shot. With heavy traffic and large numbers of pedestrians along the Route 13 corridor between the university and nearby shopping centers, officers immediately transported both victims to the hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, Nasir succumbed to his injuries. The 21-year-old victim remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to the information provided.
At just 22 years old, Nasir had so much life ahead of him. His sudden passing leaves loved ones facing the difficult reality of a future changed by loss.
