With profound sadness, we remember Brian Flanagan, 47, chief of the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company in Manchester Township, New Jersey, who tragically lost his life early Tuesday morning after being struck by an SUV while working in a construction zone on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:52 a.m. on the south outer roadway near milepost 87.7 in Edison Township, Middlesex County. According to New Jersey State Police, Flanagan was working inside a marked construction zone where two lanes were closed when a GMC SUV entered the work area and struck him. He sustained fatal injuries.
Authorities reported that the driver fled the scene but was later identified as Anthony Bernardi, 40, of Edison. Bernardi was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, and second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. He is being held at the Middlesex County Jail pending a detention hearing. The charges are allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal system.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Beyond the tragic circumstances of his death, Brian Flanagan leaves behind a legacy of service to his community. As chief of the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company, he dedicated his time and efforts to helping others and supporting the people who depended on their local firefighters.
For fellow firefighters, volunteer emergency responders, friends, and loved ones, his loss is especially painful. Those who serve in emergency services understand the commitment, responsibility, and personal sacrifice involved in protecting others. Losing a leader while he was working in a construction zone is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by people who help keep communities safe.
Flanagan’s death leaves a profound void in the department he led and in the community he served. While the details of the crash describe how his life ended, they cannot fully capture the meaning of his years of service or the relationships he built along the way.
As his family, friends, and fellow firefighters mourn, may they find strength in one another and comfort in the memories they shared with him. May the dedication he brought to his role continue to inspire those who carry on the work of serving and protecting others.
May Chief Brian Flanagan be remembered for his commitment to service, his dedication to the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company, and the lives touched through his work.
Rest in peace, Chief Flanagan. Your service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
