With heavy hearts, Cody Mallula, 16, of Geneva, Nebraska, is being remembered after his life was tragically cut short in a rollover crash following a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle in Dawson County.
According to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified Sunday, October 4, about a vehicle reported stolen from the North Platte area that was believed to be traveling eastbound on Highway 30 after leaving the Gothenburg area. Deputies located the vehicle, confirmed it was stolen and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver did not pull over, and the pursuit continued through Cozad before deputies disengaged.
Only minutes later, authorities received a report that a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle had rolled and crashed west of Lexington on Highway 30.
When deputies arrived, they found the driver had been ejected from the vehicle. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, but the teenager died from injuries sustained in the crash. Cody Mallula was later identified as the 16-year-old victim.
The Dawson County Attorney’s Office ordered an autopsy, while the Nebraska State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Lexington Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene.
For Cody’s family, friends and everyone who knew him, the circumstances surrounding his death are more than the details of an investigation. They represent the sudden loss of a young life that should have had so many more years ahead.
At just 16 years old, Cody still had countless chapters waiting to be written — more mornings to wake up to, more friendships to strengthen, more dreams to pursue and more memories to create.
Instead, those possibilities were tragically cut short on a Nebraska highway, leaving behind an absence that words cannot fully describe.
A young life should be remembered for more than the circumstances of its final moments. Cody was a son, a friend and a young person whose life held meaning for those around him. Though his time was far too brief, the memories he created will remain with the people who loved and cared for him.
