Luigi Mangione Arrest Bodycam Footage Released: New Details Emerge in Brian Thompson Case

Newly released police body-camera footage is providing additional insight into the December 2024 arrest of Luigi Mangione, who was charged in connection with the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.

The footage, released publicly after a Manhattan judge unsealed the recordings, shows Altoona, Pennsylvania, police officers approaching Mangione inside a McDonald’s on December 9, 2024, five days after Thompson was fatally shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

According to court records, a McDonald’s employee contacted 911 after recognizing similarities between Mangione and images of the suspect that had circulated in the media. Officers responded and questioned Mangione before placing him in handcuffs.

The body-camera recordings also show officers searching Mangione and his belongings. During the search of his backpack, police recovered a firearm and other items that prosecutors linked to the investigation. The footage includes his transport to the police station and subsequent processing.

The release of the footage comes after portions of the recordings had previously been shown during court proceedings. Mangione’s defense attorneys had challenged evidence obtained during the arrest, including the search of his backpack. A May 2026 New York court decision addressed those suppression issues after hearings involving testimony from law enforcement witnesses.

Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on December 4, 2024, while walking toward a Midtown hotel where UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference was scheduled to take place. Federal court records identify Mangione as the defendant in the related case.

The newly unsealed footage offers a closer look at the events surrounding Mangione’s arrest and the evidence officers recovered that morning. It also provides additional visual documentation of an arrest that became a major development in the investigation into Thompson’s death.

Mangione’s legal proceedings have continued since his arrest, with separate federal and New York state cases. The release of the body-camera footage is expected to renew public attention on the arrest, the evidence recovered, and the ongoing court proceedings.

As the case continues, the footage remains part of a broader legal record that must be considered alongside court filings, testimony, and other evidence presented in the proceedings.
