A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Friday afternoon, October 2, on U.S. Highway 29 in Pike County, Alabama, about three miles north of Troy, when a head-on collision claimed the life of 67-year-old Vernell L. Faniel of Union Springs.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the crash happened shortly before 1 p.m. near mile marker 111. Faniel was traveling as a passenger in a 2013 Toyota Corolla when it collided head-on with a 2008 Nissan Altima. Faniel suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Corolla was driven by 54-year-old Steven Wilson of Troy. Another passenger, 41-year-old Herman Faniel Jr. of Banks, was also in the vehicle. Both were injured and transported to Southeast Health in Dothan for treatment.
The Nissan was driven by 31-year-old Vanquavious V. Flournoy of Brundidge, who was injured and airlifted to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery.
The conditions of those injured were not immediately available, leaving families and loved ones waiting for answers during an already devastating afternoon.
For those who knew Vernell, however, her death represents far more than the details contained in a crash report.
At 67, Vernell had spent decades creating memories, building relationships and sharing moments with the people around her. Those years cannot be reduced to the circumstances of one tragic afternoon.
In the aftermath of a sudden loss, familiar memories often become the things people hold closest — photographs, conversations, shared experiences and the small moments that once seemed ordinary but can become priceless with time.
The investigation into the circumstances of the collision remains ongoing. Troopers with the ALEA Highway Patrol Division are working to determine what led to the head-on crash.
As investigators work to understand what happened along that stretch of Highway 29, Vernell’s family and loved ones are left to grieve a life that ended far too suddenly.
May Vernell L. Faniel be remembered not simply for the circumstances of her passing, but for the life she lived, the memories she created and the people whose lives she touched.
May her family, friends and all those mourning her loss find strength and comfort in the memories that remain.
