With heavy hearts, we remember Elijah Higgins, 19, of Hammond, Indiana, whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating incident in his hometown. Elijah was one of two young men found deceased in an alley Saturday following a reported shots-fired incident.
According to the Hammond Police Department, officers were called to the north alley of the 800 block of Truman Street, where they discovered the two victims. Elijah was later identified as one of those who lost his life. The second victim, an 18-year-old Hammond man, had not been publicly identified at the time as authorities continued working to notify his family.
At only 19 years old, Elijah had so much life ahead of him. There should have been many more years to pursue his dreams, experience life’s milestones, make memories and build a future filled with possibilities. Instead, his journey came to a heartbreaking and unexpected end.
His passing has left an unimaginable emptiness for those who knew and cared for him. Losing someone so young is a pain that words can rarely describe. During such a difficult time, family and friends may find comfort in the memories they shared with Elijah and in the moments that made his life special.

The Hammond Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities said an adult male was taken into custody in connection with the investigation and described the incident as isolated, stating there was no ongoing threat to the community.
