With profound sadness, Shalethia Horton, 35, of Nashville, Tennessee, is remembered following a fatal shooting Sunday night near University Court that has left family, friends and loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the shooting occurred at approximately 8 p.m. in the 100 block of University Court during an apparent large fight involving several women. Shalethia was struck by gunfire and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
A second woman, 32, was also struck by gunfire and is expected to recover, police said.
Homicide detectives reviewing surveillance video saw what appeared to be shots fired from a suspect vehicle. Investigators continue working to establish the chain of events, determine a motive and confirm the involvement of the vehicle.
As the investigation continues, however, the tragedy is about more than the circumstances surrounding one violent night.
It is about Shalethia Horton and the life she lived.
Her sudden passing leaves behind a painful absence that cannot be measured by police reports or investigative details. At 35 years old, she should have had many more years ahead of her — more conversations, more celebrations, more memories and more ordinary moments that would one day become cherished.
In the aftermath of such a loss, family and friends are left to hold on to the memories that remain: the moments shared, the laughter remembered and the presence of someone who can no longer walk through the door or answer a call.
Shalethia was more than a name connected to a Nashville shooting. She was a person whose life mattered and whose presence meant something to the people who knew and loved her.
September — and the night of September — will now carry a painful memory for those closest to her, a reminder of how quickly a life can be changed forever.
As authorities continue seeking answers, those mourning Shalethia are left with the more personal work of grieving, remembering and learning how to move forward without someone they expected to have beside them.
May Shalethia Horton be remembered with dignity, compassion and love. May her family, friends and loved ones find strength and comfort in the memories she leaves behind.
Rest peacefully, Shalethia Horton. Your life mattered, your memory will live on, and you will never be forgotten.
