The Standish community and local construction industry are in deep mourning following the tragic passing of 61-year-old John Woodman, who lost his life Monday afternoon in a workplace incident in Gray, Maine. The incident happened at approximately 2:09 p.m. on October 5, 2026, when the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, along with crews from Gray and New Gloucester Fire/Rescue, responded to the area of 78 Bull Run Road after receiving reports of an industrial accident.

According to authorities, the accident occurred along a petroleum pipeline right of way in a wooded area behind the property. John, a longtime employee of Shaw Brothers Construction, was operating an excavator while crews were conducting work on the pipeline.
Investigators said the excavator overturned while negotiating a steep grade, causing John to suffer fatal injuries. Despite the emergency response, he could not be saved.
John’s sudden passing has left behind a deep sense of grief for his family, friends, coworkers and everyone who knew him. After many years with Shaw Brothers Construction, he was not only an employee but also a valued member of a workplace community that is now mourning his loss.
A life is never defined only by the circumstances of its final moments. Behind every name is a story — a collection of memories, relationships, experiences and moments that remain with those left behind.
Authorities said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the accident, and the excavator sustained only minor damage. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and OSHA continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For those who loved John and those who worked beside him, the days ahead will bring the difficult task of navigating a loss that came far too suddenly.
May John Woodman be remembered for the life he lived, the people he impacted and the memories he leaves behind. May his family, friends and coworkers find comfort and strength during this heartbreaking time.
