Anthony Hanshew Motorcycle Accident: Salem Community Mourns 20-Year-Old Anthony Hanshew Following Fatal Route 37 Motorcycle Collision

With heavy hearts, the Salem, Illinois, community is mourning the loss of Anthony Hanshew, 20, of Salem, whose life was tragically cut short Tuesday night in a motorcycle crash north of the city.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:27 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 37 and Tonti Road in Marion County, where Hanshew’s motorcycle became involved in a collision with an SUV. According to the Marion County Coroner, Hanshew suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial information indicates Hanshew was traveling northbound on Route 37 when his motorcycle collided with an SUV traveling eastbound on Tonti Road. Three occupants of the SUV were transported to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of apparent minor injuries. The roadway remained closed for several hours as authorities investigated the crash and an Illinois State Police accident reconstructionist examined the scene.

But beyond the details of the investigation was a young man whose life mattered.

At just 20 years old, Anthony had so much life still ahead of him. There were more roads to travel, more memories to create, more sunsets to witness and countless chapters still waiting to be written.

Instead, his future ended in a heartbreaking moment, leaving behind an emptiness that family, friends and loved ones will now have to carry.

For those who knew Anthony, his absence will be felt in the simplest moments — in conversations that will never happen again, familiar places that suddenly feel different and memories that become more precious with every passing day.

His death is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change. A familiar road can become the setting for an unimaginable tragedy, leaving a community struggling to understand how someone so young could be gone so suddenly.

Yet Anthony’s life should not be defined only by the crash that took it.

He was 20 years old. He had dreams, relationships, hopes and a future that deserved more time. The memories he leaves behind will remain a lasting part of the lives of those who knew and cared for him.

As the Salem community and surrounding Marion County area mourn, may those closest to Anthony find comfort in the moments they shared and in the memories that cannot be taken away.

Though his life ended far too soon, Anthony Hanshew will be remembered not simply for how his life ended, but for the life he lived and the place he held in the hearts of those who knew him.

May Anthony Hanshew rest peacefully, and may his family, friends and loved ones find strength, comfort and peace during this difficult time.
