With heavy hearts, we remember Thomas Gum, 44, whose life was tragically cut short after a devastating hit-and-run crash Sunday evening, October 4, in Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia. His sudden passing has left behind a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment can become an unimaginable tragedy.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 8:20 p.m. near Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road. Investigators said Thomas was walking north to south toward Backlick Road when he was struck by a white SUV traveling in the eastbound right travel lane.
Police said the vehicle continued away from the scene without stopping, leaving investigators searching for the driver responsible. Thomas was transported to a local hospital following the collision, but despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced deceased.
Authorities identified Thomas as having no fixed address, but his life held no less value or meaning. Behind every name in a police report is a person with a story, experiences, memories, and moments that mattered.
Thomas Gum was more than the circumstances surrounding his death. He was a human being who shared this world with others, carried his own journey, and deserved to be remembered with dignity and compassion.
A life can change forever in only a matter of seconds. One moment, there is another day ahead; the next, there is only silence and unanswered questions. For those who knew Thomas or whose lives were touched by his presence, his passing represents a loss that cannot be measured by the details of a crash investigation.
The Fairfax County Police Department continues investigating the fatal hit-and-run and is working to locate the white SUV and the driver who fled the scene. Investigators are also examining whether speed or alcohol may have contributed to the collision.
As authorities search for answers, may Thomas Gum be remembered not only for the tragedy that ended his life, but for the fact that his life mattered. May his memory remain with those who knew him, and may everyone affected by his passing find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
