With heavy hearts, we remember Pedro Ariel Torres, 52, of Liberal, Kansas, whose life was tragically cut short following a devastating two-semi collision on U.S. Highway 54 west of Kingsdown. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, near milepost 77.3, approximately 5.3 miles west of Kingsdown.
Authorities said Torres was driving a 2006 Peterbilt pulling a 2016 Walker trailer westbound when the truck collided with a 2017 Freightliner pulling a 2019 Utility trailer. The Freightliner, driven by 29-year-old Alexis Serrano of Hesperia, California, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane when the two vehicles collided.
Torres suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was transported to Frontier Forensics. The crash report stated that he was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the collision. Serrano was reportedly wearing a safety restraint and suffered suspected serious injuries before being transported by EagleMed to Wesley Medical Center.
Emergency crews, including Ford County firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers, responded to the scene. The Ford County Coroner also responded after Torres was located in a ditch with apparent severe head trauma. Another person was transported for medical treatment.
The collision caused restrictions and a temporary closure of U.S. Highway 54 as emergency crews worked at the scene. Both vehicles were later removed by Southwest Towing, and the crash investigation was handled by Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper K132.
